The Model G8 Youth Summit has concluded!

During three intensive days of work and fun the student delegations passed a 16 pages long final communiqué. Important issues of the G8-agenda were discussed and incorporated in the final communiqué. The US-missile defence initiative, climate change and the conflict in Darfur were topics which were lively debated. The project has attracted some press coverage, the Deutsche Welle published an article on its website.

The Model G8 started on Thursday, 26 April with a dinner and the first get-together. On Friday, 27 April the delegates gathered for the official opening in the rooms of the German Council of Foreign Relations (DGAP). After the official part of the event was over, people enjoyed the great weather on the DGAP terrace, using the occasion to get to know each other better and to probe each other’s positions in the first informal negotiations.

The official meetings and negotiations started on Saturday, 28 April and lasted until Monday, 30 April. The negotiating rounds took place at the Hertie School of Governance in central Berlin. On Saturday and Sunday night, panel discussions were held with experts on two major G8-topics: One about the G8 and it s stance towards the "emerging economies", the other about the G8 and its responsibility in environmental policy.

On Monday the communiqué was finally drawn up with the assistance of former ambassador Adolf von Wagner and officially agreed on by the heads of states. After the farewell party, the participants left Berlin with a good feeling. They learned a lot about negotiations, how to develop compromises on the level of international diplomacy and the problems and pressures that come with the position of a head of state or a government minister.

We are pleased to announce that the Japanese delegation invites all interested students to join next year’s Model G8 Youth Summit 2008 in Yokohama, Japan. The preparations will start this summer – so stay tuned for a new round of top-level discussions and negotiations.
